Top Attractions in Cancun Mexico
Although there may be plenty to do to keep you perfectly happy at your resort in Cancun Mexico, you may want to venture out and see more of what this area has to offer. Here are some of the best things to do while vacationing in Cancun Mexico!
Cancun Underwater Museum
The Cancun Underwater Museum, known locally as MUSA, is an underwater contemporary museum that was founded in 2009 by Roberto Díaz Abraham and Jaime González Cano. At this time, there are more than 500 permanent sculptures and visitors to the museum can view the artwork either by diving, snorkeling, or riding on a glass bottom boat.
A cenote is a hole that forms when porous limestone bedrock collapses. These holes then fill with turquoise water which creates a wonderful spot for swimming and snorkeling. There is a total of 7,000 cenotes around Mexico and many of them are within a one to two hour drive from Cancun. Many people will combine trips to the cenotes with visits to the Mayan ruins, because they are along the same routes.
Mayan Ruins of Tulum
The Mayan ruins in Tulum are the most visited on the Yucatan Peninsula and they are also the only ruins that overlook the sea. They date back to the late 13th century and have been so well preserved that people can imagine what life was like when the structures were built. The Castillo is a castle that was perched on the edge of a twelve-meter limestone cliff and the breathtaking views of the Caribbean coastline are best seen from the top of the castle’s stairs.
Chichen’ Itza is the second most visited archaeological site in Mexico and the Kukulkan Pyramid is now one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramid is twenty-four-meters high and people can explore historic Mayan Culture when visiting this attraction.
Isla Mujeres is a small island that is a quick ferry ride from Cancun and while many people visit the island as an afterthought, it is the perfect spot for some laidback relaxation. The crushed coral beaches invite the turquoise waters to the shores where people sit reading and basking in the sun. Laidback does not mean boring or unexciting as visitors will find plenty to do while on Isla Mujeres to include a visit to a turtle farm and excellent snorkeling or scuba diving.
Playa Tortugas is close to the downtown area and this is the beach that offers the best party experience in Cancun. Divers and snorkelers may want to venture out to the Great Mesoamerican Coral Reef, which is hundreds of miles long and extends from Mexico to Honduras.
Playa Delfines is not as close to the downtown area as other beaches, but that is what makes it perfect for the people that are willing to travel the slightly longer distance. There is not as much partying on this beach, so it is more laidback and tranquil. The lifeguards are on duty all day long, so that people of all ages are safe while they are swimming in the warm tropical waters. One of the best highlights of this beach is that dolphins can be seen by the dozens from the shore.
Delphinus Dreams Cancun
The Delphinus Dreams Cancun is operated out of the Dreams Cancun Hotel in Hotelera Zona and allows guests to swim and interact with the dolphins. It is a great experience where people can learn more about the dolphins and potentially participate in a lifelong dream.
The Interactive Aquarium is in the La Isla Shopping Village, just west of the Hotelera Zona. The aquarium is a family friendly place where visitors can learn about the local marine life with interactive activities. Just imagine touching sting rays and echinoderms or even swimming and interacting with many different marine species.
La Isla Shopping Village
La Isla Shopping Village is an amazing open area mall that is located on waterways and filled with approximately 162 boutiques, stores, and restaurants. Shoppers can also find multiple types of family entertainment or take a boat ride through the waterway channels.
Playa del Carmen
An hour South of Cancun is where you will find the colorful beach town of Playa del Carmen. This playful and eclectic town is filled with charming shops, restaurants, and bars and the popular pedestrian walkway of 5th Avenue.
