How Far in Advance Should You Book Your International Vacation or Honeymoon?
If you’re planning a honeymoon or a dream vacation (or both) to an international destination such as Mexico or the Caribbean, you may be overwhelmed with the details and wondering when you should do what. One common concern for travelers is how far in advance to book your trip. There’s no formulaic answer to that question, but there are some good guidelines to follow.
Oh, the ever-elusive low-priced plane ticket. Sometimes you score it, and sometimes you don’t. Here’s a secret: airlines release their schedules 335 days in advance and studies show that international flight prices typically do not drop much from their initial price. Starting about 3 months prior to the departure date, prices usually start to increase! So bottom line, there is no reason to wait hoping to score a better deal. You should go ahead and book your tickets as soon as you decide where you want to go.
Resorts and Hotels
When should you book your resort or hotel? This is a little bit harder to answer, because it depends on a few factors. First of all, where are you going and how big is the resort? If you have a specific resort in mind, it’s better to book early, as soon as you decide where you are going. If the resort is small with few rooms, or if you are traveling during a very popular time such as the week of Christmas, you really need to get that booked as soon as possible. It’s advisable to book anywhere from six to nine months in advance because many of the most popular resorts and most popular room categories truly do sell out. If you’re just staying in a motel for a summer vacation, you have a little more flexibility and don’t need to worry about it until a couple months before.
So when should you book your honeymoon or vacation? The simple answer is as soon as possible, preferably 9 to 11 months out. Here’s my recommendation: Plan where you want to go during your next coffee break. Then go ahead and book both your flights and hotel together as a package deal so you can save even more. This way, you’ll get the best deal and you’ll get to book the resort and room category you want. No procrastination means no stress! Now, all you’ll have to do is dream about all the fun you’re going to have.
