Destination Overview: Cancun Mexico

Are you thinking about going to Cancun Mexico for your next tropical vacation, or perhaps your honeymoon? If so, this article will help you learn a little more about this beautiful destination!

Location:

Cancun in a city located on the Caribbean Sea in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is situated in southeastern Mexico on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and is one of Mexico's easternmost points. The popular resort area of Riviera Maya stretches just to the south of Cancun.

Overview:

Cancun is Mexico’s most popular beach destination, and while many of the 4.8 million people that visit this area yearly are looking for a phenomenal party scene, there is plenty available for those travelers who are looking for peace and relaxation. Anyone who travels into Cancun will find themselves landing and departing from a modern international airport that offers multiple options for flights at reasonable prices. The airport is conveniently located within 15-25 minutes from the Hotel Zone and only 15 minutes from the downtown area. Cancun is a great option for travelers who are looking for an international beach vacation that is relatively affordable and easy to get to from the US.

Cancun is made up of the mainland and a barrier island that is shaped like the number seven, and contains three different regional areas. Most of the hotels and tourism destinations are in Zona Hotelera, which is a small island that is twelve miles long and one mile wide. Zona Hotelera is on the Caribbean Coast and visitors will become mesmerized with the lagoons and spectacular beaches that make up the exceptional natural beauty of the region. The other two regions include Punta Sam, which is also known as Playa Mujeres or Zona Hotelera North, and El Centro, which is the mainland downtown area.

Cancun has near perfect weather year-round with average temperatures around 80 degrees and a minimum of 250 days of sunshine. The gentle sea breezes allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful beaches that the Mexican government has steadily improved and restored in recent years by adding additional sand and by planting of thousands of palm trees. Anyone with small children may want to consider spending time on one of the beaches that face Bahia de Mujeres, because the water is calmer there than at the beaches directly on the Caribbean Sea. If you want a break from the beach, the area around Cancun is filled with archaeological wonders and is the perfect place to explore ancient Mayan ruins.

Travelers in Cancun can purchase anything that they desire while shopping at one of the centros comerciales, also known as malls, which are air-conditioned and quite modern. In between shopping trips, guests can participate in one of the many popular sporting activities in Cancun, including sailing, go karts, motorcycle riding, golf, scuba diving, and snorkeling.

Anyone who is interested in traveling to Cancun shouldn’t worry about their safety any more than when traveling within the US. Cancun is one of the safest places in all of Mexico and many of the problems the country currently faces with crime occurs approximately 1,300 miles to the northwest of Cancun along the Mexico border. To put things in perspective, this distance is comparable to the distance between New York and Texas. However, people are still advised to use common sense precautions while traveling.

Cancun is such a fabulous destination and should definitely be on your list when searching for an all-inclusive vacation. You should choose this location if you want to spend time on white sandy beaches while playing in the water, whether it is swimming, kayaking, riding a wave runner, or participating in a jungle boat tour. This is also the place to be if you want to party and dance until dawn at the numerous nightclubs. Lastly, another great reason to pick this destination is if you want to explore the ancient Mayan ruins and learn about the Mayan culture. Just don’t forget to stop in between the ruins to shop for local crafts and to experience the local food and drinks.

When to go:

Peak season for Cancun is November through April. This is the best time to go because you are likely to have near perfect weather. Prices for hotels reach their peak between December 15th and January 5th, and rates during this popular time are typically 50% higher than the regular rates. If you are willing to pay the higher rates, and want to go during the Christmas holiday, you should book at least 6 months or more in advance. Keep in mind that Cancun is a popular spring break destination and tends to get crowded in March and April, so you may want to avoid these months if you are searching for something quieter. Budget conscious travelers can save about 20% to 50% if you travel during low season which is May through October.
