Jamaica is a lush tropical island located in the northwestern Caribbean Sea, about 90 miles south of Cuba. It’s the third largest island in the Caribbean and is approximately 148 miles long and 52 miles wide, which is about the size of the state of Connecticut. Known as the 'Home of All Right', this island paradise is renowned for its natural beauty, reggae music, delicious island cuisine, and easy-paced relaxation. The landscape features beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and rivers, which allows visitors to engage in an exciting variety of adventures and activities.
Most of the tourism in Jamaica is centered in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios located on the island’s northern coast, as well as in Negril which is located on the island’s west coast. The Donald Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is located in Montego Bay and is the most efficient airport for travelers going to either of these destinations.
Ocho Rios is a two-hour drive from the Montego Bay airport. It was one of the first towns in Jamaica to be developed for tourism, and is a great spot for anyone who is looking for an active vacation. The city offers many opportunities for adventure, as it sits on the edge of the rain forest in a sheltered bay with breathtaking mountains in the background. In this region, visitors can climb through the famous waterfall at Dunn's River Falls, soar through a rain forest on a zip line, bobsled down a mountain, or swim with the dolphins.
Montego Bay, affectionately nicknamed MoBay, is the second largest city in Jamaica and is considered the epicenter of tourism. It’s a great option for anyone who doesn’t want a long commute to and from the airport. Popular excursions in this region include golfing at the Tryall Club or White Witch Golf Course, coasting on a bamboo raft along the soothing Martha Brae River, and exploring the Rose Hall Great House, a beautiful plantation home with a storied past.
The fairly underdeveloped beach town of Negril is located on the west coast of Jamaica, and is an hour and a half drive southwest from the Montego Bay airport. In this laid-back town travelers will find plenty of opportunities for fun and relaxation as well as a vibrant nightlife and luscious ocean views. Negril has the island of Jamaica's longest stretch of powdery white beach, appropriately named Seven Mile Beach, and it’s consistently rated as one of the top ten beaches in the world.
No matter which region of Jamaica you choose to visit, you are sure to find a land of unique experiences, engaging activities, breathtaking landscapes and warm, welcoming people.
